You are probably referring to inherited runners stranded. If a relief pitcher comes in with the bases loaded- he has inherited three runners. If he ends the inning with only one of those runners scoring, then he left two inherited stranded. Just a measurement of the pitchers effectiveness. Baseball is a statistics oriented game, afterall.

An inherited runner left stranded is a stat used to measure relief pitchers. For example, if a relief pitcher comes into the game with runners on base he "inherits" those runners. If those runners score they count against the pitcher that allowed them to reach base, not against the relief pitcher. This is why ERA isn't a good measure to judge relief pitchers. Inherited runners left stranded is much better because it looks at the runners that were on base when a relief pitcher comes into the game.

an "inherited runner" is one that is already on base when a new pitcher comes into the game, he "inherits" the runners from the previous pitcher. Stranded simply means they did not score.

"Inherited" means the number of runners on base when a relief pitcher takes over.

I'm not sure if you mean "left on base", meaning the inning ends with runners who haven't scored.
