I wouldn't consider viruses in the equation unless you plan on going to alot of porn sites or just plain bad sites or download a bunch from P2P networks or BitTorrent.
I've had the same PC since 1999. When my hardware starts getting bogged down I upgrade using whatever hardware I want, just bust out the Tiger Direct catalog and get what I need. Can't do that with a Mac. When shopping for software I don't have to dig or go to a special store to buy it. I've never experienced having to try to find compatible software, never really even thought about it.
I've been using Spybot Search and Destroy(Free) and AGV Free Virus Scanner and have yet to get infected by anything that wasn't easily wiped out.
If you are going to buy a Mac and run Windows on it why bother with the Mac? It's supposed to be Apple's superior operating system that makes the Mac so great. It's Microsoft's vulnerabilities not the PCs themselves getting viruses.
In my experience the usual trouble with PCs(Windows) is between the chair and the keyboard. And even though Vista isn't the greatest it is alot harder to screw up than any other version of Windows to date.

I personally use a pc but its not my preference i have friends that have a Mac and i think they are wonderful they are extremely fast and they can run multiple applications at one time without slowing down. The main thing that PC tries to pull on a Mac is they say Mac's don't have any memory but a Mac don't need all the memory a PC does. A Mac also has a lot less chance of getting a virus they say a Mac with no spyware has less of a chance of getting a virus than a PC with spyware and all that. The only major downfall to a Mac is there are some programs that are not yet compatible with a Mac but i expect this to change in the near future. Whenever i buy a new computer it will definatly be a Mac you can't beat apples software!!! Hope this helps.

i really would have to go with PC. I know this is a big debate, and I'm judging this on experience, as I use a PC at home, while I use a Mac at the office. I find the PC much easier to use, and much more compatible with all the other PC users out there. Mac's, while looks cool, different and sets you apart, have lousy interface, unfriendly system, and has a lot of problems running some of the basic programs. If your planning to use it for your family, ie, a lot of kids or first time users, go with the PC. the virus and other problems are overrated, and most of them you wont even encounter. Plus, in the long run, the pc will be much cheaper.
Good luck!

BOTH are awesome for different things. Wanna make DVDs, videos, pictures, media, etc? Mac, hands down. Want a broader platform for Gaming, word processing, etc. go with a PC. Macs are less prone to obtaining a virus than PCs, and Macs are much easier to use, much more intuitive and self-explanatory than a PC. I do tend to lean towards the Mac more now because of the Parallels and bootcamp programs(running Windows on the Mac), and I just love Apple products. Good luck!

Well if it's going to be a family computer, I'd get the mac that is windows compatible. This way the people who like macs can use the mac, and those who like windows can use windows. I prefer macs over pc's but I like the fact that if I wanted to run windows I could. However after my 4 year warranty is up on my pc I'm changing it to Linux.

I have used an Apple for the past 5 years on a regular basis. I have a PC but don't even turn it on. You can run almost any program on an Apple and they are more friendly as far as moving and deleting. Delete and it's gone, it's not hanging in there somewhere.
It's also plug and play. You don't have cords running all over like a PC, to me that is a big plus for me.
Good luck
I think most people like a PC because they are used to them and most have them. Don't know why, many more viruses. I have never had one with my Apple and I had one in my PC at my office.

Personally I prefer the mac. But, pcs have far more available software, both to buy from retailers and download, so I use pcs, both for work and home. If you keep your anti-virus and firewall and antispyware software up to date you should be fine from all of those issues, in the majority of cases. To avoid the spyware/adware use firefox or opera as a browser instead of internet explorer. I use avg antivirus - free and the firewall that comes with windows xp. The browsers and antivirus are available to download from www.download.com.

Macs seem to be a much better computer for families, especially if someone in your family needs to do a creative-type project. The only downside is that you have to buy a word processing program, like Microsoft Word or Appleworks if you need to type an essay or other paper.

Macs still seem to be a better family computer overall though. Much easier to use versus a PC.

Macs are completely integrated and expensive. PCs are not standardized, so they can be way better than Macs or really crappy... Also, there are certain things that are exclusive to each system. For example: if you want the best in video editing, you'll need an iMac, but if you want the best in video games, you'll definitely want a PC.

Get the one you try and like. They both do basically the same thing. They both have the same, or equivalent, software so don't worry about that part.

I think you'll find the Mac a little more reliable, but make sure you have a virus scanner there too!
