If you want good location then use the Tropicana. Must safer area than the Strat is and you have many of the major hotels around you. Both are budget priced for being on the strip since they are older properties.
Depending on when you are coming keep an eye on the news. The union took a strike vote tonight regarding some hotels and the Tropicana was included.

I stayed at the Tropicana in February...definitely not the flashiest of the hotels/casinos, but then again we hardly spent any time there. The room was big and so was the bathroom. And there's a great karaoke bar at the base of the tower! I think I would choose Tropicana over Stratosphere just because it is more central to the strip.

I'd definitely pick the Tropicana over the Stratosphere. It is older, but it's in a much much better part of town. The Trop puts you right next to the MGM and NYNY, two hotels with a lot of nightlife. The Excaliber is another hotel in that area. It often has deals. Check out their websites for promotions.

Tropicana is older but closer to the rest of the action. Stratosphere is fun, but you don't want to walk around outside that hotel!

If you want the best luxury for the most reasonable price, I say hands-down that the Golden Nugget is THE place to go! No, it's not on the strip, but it's in the center of downtown and there are a gazillion easy ways to get from there to the strip if that's where you want to go. But for something like $60 a night, and only slightly more on weekends, you get to stay in a place with a great buffet, luxury rooms, use of the spa suite for a little extra, and a swimming pool in the middle of a shark tank that's awesome! And they have everything you could want for casinos, and all you need to do is step out the door to be in the middle of the Fremont St. Experience

I think Luxor and Excalibur have decent rooms for decent prices. Tropicana is very well priced and is at the perfect location, you will probably just want a place to crash after partying anyways so who cares what it looks like.
