Do you have any security enabled? Maybe you should try to get some anivirus or use the one bundled. or try to defragment your disk drives.

To be honest, when Windows starts getting slow like that I tend to find that the only real cure is to wipe it clean and start again. Not what you want to hear, I know, but having fiddled around with all sorts of settings etc before, a clean install always seems to become most beneficial.Besides your startup list, try checking your services...Start > Run > services.msc Anything that is not crucial to what you do, set to manual or disable from starting up. If you have apache or some kind of web server, a couple anti-virus programs or things of the like, set the services for them to manual and then try another reboot. See if that doesn't fix things. perform these- 1. Checked the start up list and only have 3 things on boot up. 2. Ran a adaware check. 3. Did a system restore. 4. Performed a defrag. hope that helps sabir

Go to START, the RUN. Type 'msconfig' (without the ' marks).
Go to the startup tab. Uncheck programs you recognize, but you do not want to start on start-up. Example Quicktime, Adobe, Office. These programs will still work if you uncheck them! Do not uncheck anything HP as it may mess up your computers drivers.
Click OK, and reboot your computer. When your computer boots up, check the box that says 'don't show this message on startup again'.
Enjoy.

Did you purchase it new? If not maybe have the RAM checked. The 5 min blank screen concerns me because it could be that your system is looking for programs it can't find or that it is hanging in BIOS.
If it's new take it to a dealer repair tech.

You might be having a hard drive problem. If this pc is new, get tech support on it right away.
If out of warranty, get one of the free system checkers like PCPitstop and have it do a thorough check.
