No. The mayan calendar ended more than once and was extended. That the calendar was not prepared past this date is more an indication of internal strife and a change of priorities than any "end of the world'.

On ancient maps, everything west of England was water, marked 'here be monsters' and many people felt if they travelled too far they'd fall off the edge.

There's a correlation there.

Okay I've finally done my own reaseach into this. The mayan long calendar is made up of days, and their larger increments. Today, then looks like this in the mayan calendar:

12.19.14.11.13

Using their calendar it's true that Dec 21st 2012 will read as

13.0.0.0.0

Cool number, I'll admit.

But the Mayans used a base 20 system. Therefore the long calendar isn't going to run out until October 13th 4772.

We've got ways to go before we start to sing about the end of the world :)

The end of the world it`s expected since Jesus left this world .Since then a great number of self claimed mystics and philosophers and even prophets have made stupid clames that the Apocalypse will be in an year , in an decade , in a century . None of them were right . If it`s to believe the mayans , the the end of the word will be in 2012 . But there`s another problem . The one who made the chronolgical counting of the years , Dyonisus made a mistake , a error of 4 years plus minus. So if the end will be ( which I doubt ) in 2012 , it will really mean that it will be in 2008 , or in 2016.
I don`t mean to frighten you but 2008 has a more plausible explanation to be the End of Days . Thus, since Jesus was crucified on Friday, the sixth day of the week, 6 stands for evil and death, as does its intensive form 666. But Jesus rose two days later, on what may be called the eighth day of the week, and so 8 is the number of resurrection, of renewal, of life restored and triumphant. It is thus no accident that the letters in the name of Iesous add up to 888 ( Gematria system) . 8 august 2008 it may be ( again , which I doubt ) the Second Coming of Jesus Christ .
Then again Nostradamus predicted in 3000 , or 7000 ( it depends on the interpretation ) .
A scientist who I really respect , and who was involved in religious studies , Isaac Newton , calculated in 2060 according to some calculations on the Temple of Solomon.
He was the only genius among prophets . But still nobody is right until we see the End coming.
You shouldn`t worry . There`s a lot of generations to come .
And the Bible is a huge metaphor and the so called End will probably mean WWIII

false. The reason many people believe this is because the Mayan calender ends on dec. 20, 2012. It doesn't actually say, "this date is the end of the world" or anything like that. But even if it did say that, why should we believe the mayans anyway? The calender they used was only as accurate as a modern day house calender, and all that crap that they predicted world events is buľlshit. Thats because the terms they used to describe these events were to broad. For example, they would describe WW2 as "in this period, humanity will be in great danger" or something like that. I mean, it really is just too broad of a statement to be accurate. Also, these events are based on astrology which is the most bullsħit activity to ever call itself a science.

An ancient Mayan calender was found that did not go past 2012 and is assumed that they were predicting the end of the world. The end of the world has been predicted several times in the past and obviously has not come true.

I do not see the end of the world happening in 2012 or anytime soon unless, terrorists plan to attack the children in our schools. This is what they have been talking about on Glenn Beck's show. Look up the segment on tonites show for 9/12, A Perfect Day Revealed.

Personally.... I don't think it was the world ends in 2012...more like maybe... well, they had to stop predicting and writing their calender at SOME point right? Can't do it forever! Maybe they thought 2012 was far enough and if they got close to that date then they'd just resume writing it. ; )

No, I don't think its true. No one can actually predict the end of the world. We can only speculate and theorize on the state of the world like global warming but not the total destruction of the world.

I seriously doubt it. People have been "predicting" the end of the world for years. First, they said it was gonna end in 2000. Well, guess what, it's 2007 and we're still here.
