I recently bought my betta a 2.5 gallon tank. It came with a Whisper filter, but it was too strong for my betta (it sucked him into the filter) so I immedentialy took it out. He has an air pump in their from his last 1 gallon tank but no filter.

Does any one know of a good filter for a betta that WON'T suck him in?

Actually, yes. You can buy a sponge filter which are relatively cheap at the pet stores. The sponge filter's force can be controlled by the valve it comes with that should be gentle enough for your betta. I have one in my 10 gallon breeding tank for bettas and its safe enough for betta fry, so I recommend the sponge filter.

Bettas do not need a filter as long as you change the water regularly, make sure the water doesn't look too dirty. The tanks I've seen that are made for Bettas don't have filters. Bettas also actually enjoy living in small environments so do not keep him or her in a big tank. I had a Betta that lived in a small tank with out a filter for about 3 years which is the normal life span for a Betta. So I don't think you need the filter. Oh and just a tip, DO NOT put another betta in the same tank because if they are both males they will fight each other. Good luck!

Like some of the other posters have stated sponge filters will work. I have actually put a piece of panty hose over the intake and it slows down the current and the Betta can't be sucked in. You don't need a filter if you do the proper tank maintenance. You would need to change out the water at least every 4 days. But I will say that when having a filter tank maintenance is much easier and it is more beneficial for the fish.

Someone else asked this a while back. I don't know that anyone ever came up with an answer for it. I don't know of any filter that can comfortably fit in something that small and NOT suck them in. It just doesn't seem possible. I had suggested that they are better off without a filter, and just rely on water changes. I change my daughter's bettas 2.5 tank every week (100% water change) and have had no problems at all and it's been over a year. There have been times that it's gone a bit longer, but for the most part it's been between 5 & 7 days. I just use dechlorinator and make sure the water is about the same temp. Everyone has their own ideas over the "right and wrong" of keeping bettas, but everyone is entitled to their opinions. You have to do what works for you and your fish. I hope this helps in some way. Good luck. ;o)

I have my Betta in a 5 gal hex tank. I put fake plants around the intake just to block some of the sucking power. He got stuck in my 30 gallon filter so I took him out of the big tank and put him in the smaller tank.

BTW, I have him with 5 ember tetras. Very cute little fish.

Best filters for Betta's tanks are sponge filters driven by a gentle air flow. They're cheap, and after they are cycled they are very reliable.
Also they are quite handy as a portable aid to cycling.
Good ones are sold by Jungle Labs and Hydro-sponge.
And they're not expensive.

I recommend putting him in a 5 gallon and that's minimum. Then you could try a power filter that has an attachment that won't allow him to be sucked into the filter.

In fact, Betta dun need to have a Filter. But should you need, you can use sponge filter-especailly whn your fish tabk is bare. You just need to siphone the dirt out once every two day when you dun use filter. Betta are hardy fish, can tolerate wide range of water condition.

Cheers.

Bettas do not need filters. They are only one small fish, in a small tank, that produce minimal waste. I have had a betta for years in a tank with no filter.

I have a few of these: http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/prod/207474/product.web - they are one of the few nano filters I've found that's got an adjustable water flow.
