No Salt will Probably kill the plants too. Try beer in a pan they love it, apparently they get drunk, fight and kill each other. All Kidding aside, it works.

When the salt gets wet it will dissolve, and get into the soil. Salt in the soil can be very hard on plant roots. Some species are salt, or drought tolerant, but eventually you will ruin your planter's soil doing this. You might try placing the salt in some sort of pan or plastic sheeting so that most of it stays in place, but I would suggest you use "Snail food," or "Snail bait" instead. It kills the snails quite effectively without harming the plants. Works well on other pests as well...

Use eggshells or beer. The eggshells cut them and the beer gets them drunk and the shells add calcium to the soil. Don't give them the good beer. Buy the cheapest you can find. The salt may burn your plants roots. Use salt directly on the snails if you are looking for some lite sadomasochistic entertainment.

Don't use salt on your plants. It will stunt them, and eventually kill them. You can make traps of beer where the snail falls into them and drowns.

Better yet, look for products with the names "EscarGo," or "Sluggo." Both of these are granular iron phosphate, which also fertilizes your soil as it degrades. Snails and slugs are attracted to this compound, then they crawl off to die. They should be available locally, but if you can't find them I've provided some links below.

Use diatomaceous earth. You can get it at Home Depot in the garden department. Sprinkle it around the plants and it kills the snails. Sadly, it will kill beneficial insects also, as would salt. Don't get the kind for swimming pool filters as it has been treated and doesn't work for insects.

Not directly underthem, but when it rains or when you water them, the roots will absorb the salt causing the plant to loose water and may end up killing them

No you will need to go to Lowe's or Menard's to get you some sea shells, take hammer and crush them spread them out in your plant boxes and no more snails. Pouring salt will kill anything you have growing or will have growing in you plant boxes.

I wouldnt use salt as high salinity will kill your plants. Try using a shallow container 10/15mm deep and fill it with beer. At least they die happy

The salt will eventually disappear if you intend on watering your plants. You might want to try saw dust or pencil shavings, i find that they both work well..
Good luck
