I'd like the book to have to do with sports or maybe like 60's or 70's rock.

I was going to recommend My Sister's Keeper because it is one of the best portrayals of family issues I have ever read!

But then I read the rest of your question and I was bummed! But, the ones I can think of (and are in order)....

Tears of a Tiger
Forged by Fire
-and-
Darkness Before Dawn ALL by Sharon M. Draper and all are really great books. All dealing with family issues =)

Sad books too.

Anne Lamott wrote a couple of books about a teenager who played competitive tennis; The first was "Rosie," the second was "Crooked Little Heart." Almost all her books are about family, all her fiction anyway.

Also, Anne Tyler writes some really awesome books on family. I'm thinking of "Accidental Tourist" and "Breathing Lessons." Not much in the way of music or sports there though.

Jodi Picoult writes some really good books about family too: "My Sister's Keeper" for instance.

Enjoy!
