What activates the 6 gear light to turn on?

On a harley davidson motorcycle what turns on the 6 gear light on the speedo

Just like RobertD said, its a switch in transmission. Its called......... gear position switch. Linked to shift drum

Most likely a mechanical switch inside the trans, but it can be a proximity sensor. To be honest, there is no need for a light for an experienced rider, I always know what gear I am in.

6 gear light?

Are you sure you don't mean the cruise control indicator?

My Dyna has the 6 speed Cruise Drive transmission, and no cruise control.
