Unless you are in some kind of a special program (which exist only in a few limited majors when they promise to provide service after graduation), you have to pay back whatever you took out. How much people take out depends on how expensive the school is, how much money the student and his/her parents have, and what other forms of financial aid (scholarships, grants, work-study, etc.) the student got.
