I am interested in a career in information technology. However, I am not great at math. Do you need to be especially good at math to excel, or can I make it in the field? Also what kinds of classes should I be taking in high school? And finally: what is the highest level of math needed? (e.g. algebra, calculus, trig?)

IT requires logical thinking. IT also requires systems thinking and problem solving. All of these talents are somewhat related to math.

However new skills in IT, especially with collaborative workflow systems, require more communications and project management than math.

My suggestion is to study as hard as you can, because learning all of the above will help you. And try many jobs before you settle down on the one you love.

For a career in IT normal business math will suffice.
Algebra, Statistics, and courses dealing in logic.
If you pursue a college degree in Information Technology you will be required to take calculus and probably one course of trig.

Good luck,

I've been in IT for 30 years in high tech. mfg. environments and have never used any of the higher level mathematics, mostly business math and statistics.
