What it does is get the baby used to sucking on a bottle's nipple. And it is best if mom isn't the one doing the feeding. Most breast fed babys KNOW that mom is where the milk comes from and can get frustrated wanting to nurse and now wanting the bottle. :Let daddy do it. or grandma or someone else.

It's a good idea if you ever plan on needing the baby to take a bottle instead of you nursing him/her. And it's best to start doing that early so that they are used to it and get into the habit of taking a bottle every once in a while. If you ever want dad to feed, or a babysitter, or if they go to daycare... do everyone a favor and get them used to it early. And having them used to a bottle can make it easier to wean cause they will already know about the bottle.

Yes this is true. Many experts say to introduce the bottle after your baby is two weeks old others say 6 weeks. I did two weeks and my children took to the bottle easily. People who are breastfeeding extremists will say even later. In general two weeks should be long enough unless you are having difficulty breastfeeding. Making a baby adaptable is to everyones advantage.
My friend who waited until 6 weeks has had lots of trouble getting her son to take the bottle. This is a problem not only if you want to wean, but if you want to go anywhere without baby for a few hours.
PS Use the slow size nipple so bottle feeding is not prefered to breastfeeding

Ramadan Kareem, yes it makes it easier to do the weaning later on but the down side that women don't tell about is that the way the milk needs to come out like the squeezing can spoil the shape of the breasts and make them sag like the shape of a goats ears the firmness goes, not nice at all.
I'm also pregnant and unlike with my first child i will not be breast feeding this one, i know its often said to be better for the child but there's plenty of formula's with even more vitamins than the breast and last time i found breast feeding very difficult and it can make you feel like a cow, giving, giving and its very tiring. The best thing is breast feeding makes you lose weight. x

How far pregnant are you? Is it your first? Do you have any names yet?

It certainly helps them get used to a bottle, never a bad thing. And it can give you a break to have someone else feed the baby...get an extra nap, pamper yourself a bit. My first wouldn't let me feed her pumped milk but would take it from anyone else. My second only wanted food, so it never mattered, breast, bottle or who fed her...she just wanted to eat. Good luck!

We introduced the bottle to our daughter at 6 weeks- and she was absolutely fine- a bottle of breastmilk. Daddy gave it to her. She is 13 months old and still breastfeeding. Does it make it easier to wean? I wouldn't know- she started to use a cup at 6 months of age- and was off the bottle at 8- refused it.
I work full-time and she needed a bottle for when I am at work. Now, she takes breastmilk, whole milk and once in awhile diluted juice in a sippie.
