Do cops have a conscience?

What is it about a uniform and badge that changes a decent human being into a snotty little Hitler?

I think all people have a conscious. Some people don't pay attention to it from time to time though.

About police officers in particular: what do you imagine is the personality profile of people who choose to pursue police work in the first place? Could it be a need for power and authority and the belief in a controlled society versus civil individual rights (when they cause chaos or allow a possible suspect to go free)?

Now give those same people a gun, surround them with peers who have a code that says not to talk about others even when they engage in illegal or unethical behavior, and expose them to real criminals and drug users and you might get a jaded person.

My personal idea is that no police officer should be allowed on the street for more than one year at a time and then they should be rotated to desk or community service (like midnight basketball or other programs) for a year before returning to the street.

I also support random drug testing and polygraph tests for all police officers at least twice a year. I doubt it will happen but the hope for a society that protects citizens even against it's guardians springs eternal.

Nine out of 10 cops have a conscience. However, you will have one, which we call a 'hot dog' here, where there can be the potential of abuse of a law not well designed.

a "power trip" starts to kick in. plus they do have alot presure. they have a quota to meet at the end of every month.

if you got a stupid ticket.......it was because it was the end of the month.

my dad is the cheif of police. so i know what goes on

Becuase thier 10 foot tall and bullet proof. just ask them, they will tell ya.

Ask ANYONE who owns a gun - it's the same sense of "I can KILL YOU before you can even lay a hand on me" ;);););)
