Currently have a Gateway GT5098E Media Center, and crucial.com claims my motherboard can work with DDR 4000 memory. Found a deal on DDR2 4200 Memory, but Im not sure of it's backward compatibility and dont want to waste the money if it's not going to even work. If someone can help me out it's appreciated. Please help!

DDR modules have 184 pins.
DDR2 modules have 240 pins.
I think you can see the problem.

Backwards compatiblity is a risk for you and your money, of you really want to buy it now, contact the manufacturer / maker to know the right compatibility issues, if not you can wait / or search a DDR 4000 memory which is completely compatible to your Gateway GT5098E, DDR2 backwads compatibility may be hazardous because it works well on its compatible motherboard which is DDR2, DDR is great with DDR only.

Your PC uses DDR (184pins) and NOT DDR2 (240 pins). There is NO DDR 4000 but DDR400 instead.

You can only use DDR 400 or PC-3200.

Note that PC2 is also DDR2. Anything that says PC2 or DDR2 is not compatible with your PC.

Absolutely NO GUESSWORK in this answer!

No. DDR2 won't work on a DDR board.
