Is it because even Bush knows every last republican will turn on him if they are actually FORCED to go fight their own war?

Because then wealthy Republicans would have to send THEIR kids too - instead of the kids from poorer families who feel that joining the military is their only option, as is the case now.

The war in Iraq ... the Vietnam war ... they were not your grandfather's wars. WWII was fought by all.

As recently reported: The national figures show what you might expect: Youth from low-income areas are far more likely to end up in the military.

This is the most convincing proof yet that as the war drags on - and without a compulsory draft - our battle-weary military has become a ghastly dividing line between rich and poor and black, Latino and white.

"The heaviest burden of war is being carried by less fortunate Americans," Rep. Charles Rangel (D-Harlem), a Korean War veteran, said yesterday.

Military recruiters have turned uncommonly aggressive at targeting black and Hispanic high school youth.

"They're coming into the high schools of the South Bronx nearly every week," Serrano said, and "they're demanding contact information for students."

One evening last week, Paterson said, a military recruiter called his home and told his wife he wanted to talk to their daughter, a high school senior, about enlisting. Paterson's wife told him the family wasn't interested, but the recruiter persisted and even asked to speak to the girl directly.

The next day, Paterson said, the recruiter called again and left a phone message for his daughter.

If only our government worked as hard getting blacks and Hispanics into college as it does sending them to Iraq, Serrano said.

These kids will be tossed aside when they return home. This is an evil war, preying on the poor and created solely to make money.

There hasn't been a draft since 1971. The transition state to an all volunteer army was the lottery system. A draft isn't necessary so I don't understand any relevance of a "draft" to the war....

This is the type of question I would expect to find on Moveon.org
The war is extremely unpopular because people have been duped into dismissing or, at best, minimizing the Islamic terrorists' threats and attacks against Americans all over the globe. Our previous policies of inaction and no effective response only resulted in more terror and indiscriminate murder - and finally culminated in the events of 9/11 - yet there are people who apparently want to revert back to these policies that failed so miserably.
Do not think for a moment that we can isolate ourselves and "terror proof" our nation while maintaining even a semblance of the personal freedoms and civil rights we now enjoy.
This is not "their own war" - this is America's war - a war against an ideology of hatred and domination that threatens all civilized nations.
Be aware that the lefts' apparent policy of "live and let live" only works if both sides abide by it.

First, we do not need the draft in order to be victorious in Iraq. Second, if it wasn't for the liberals "god" who was in office for eight embarrassing years slashing our military to 1/3 it's previous levels, we would not be having this crisis of over-working our troops. Third, if the same people who abuse the freedoms our heroes provide would actually pick up a gun and help defend our national security, I might listen to them a little more.

But, hey, I guess it is easier to shout insults than have the courage to stand in the heat of battle.

Don't need to, Drafts bring in the dirt bags that fail to care about this country. The young vets are learning the mistakes that or fore fathers have made. Soon it will be if you ain't in your out. If that don't make since to you then it don't matter!

The people with money don't want to send "their" kids.....how many of them sign up? Lots of people are looking for a way to a means for an education. Money......that's why there is no draft and oh the hell that would be raised, think about it.

Because then Bush would certainly lose the support of the Republicans.

How many Republican Senators or Congressmen have kids in Iraq?
