Daniel G is correct. This is one of the rare instances that GM used the same block casting to build both a 396 and a 427. There were also several 283/327 small block castings which they did the same thing. If the engine is not assembled and you have access to the cylinders a sure way to tell is to measure the bore. 396's were a 4.094" bore 427's were 4.250"

That casting # could be for either one of them, in 66 was a 427 made with that casting # and also 65-69 396 carried the same casting #. If you look at the block on the side where the head sits further back there will be some numbers and letters. I would need the 3 letter block code i.e. CDJ or whatever it is.

It's a 396 from a 1968-69 light truck.
This might be a 396 "tall block". If so, you may not wish to use it in a car as this is a long stroke motor.
If it's a truck engine it will have the word "truck" cast into the block behind the timing cover.

Did you read the fine print at this site? According to their description its a 350 cu.in motor bored .030 which pans out to 355 cubic inches. It has double hump heads which by todays standards aren't even close to the hp. numbers you could get with either of the two new VORTEC small block heads.

Of which car do you speak?? take those numbers to a GM Dealer. Would have been alot easier if you would have given Make Model and Year of the car.
