Re@lT@lk: the prompt is to describe one of the best or worst experiences of my life, and why it is so.

I guess I'll find out if it really was one of the worst experiences of my life when I recieve my admissions letter (accept or reject) in April, which will directly be affected by this!

xx 3DD fan: it kind of is on my transcript because it is missing a semester due to this.

Brian: heh, I wish I could write a college essay in 5 minutes: if you're wondering, that was just a description of the scenario; it was NOT my essay.

No, I think this is appropriate. Don't use the word "screwed", and you probably need to add something about what you learned from it (getting a college education so that now that you are an adult, you will never again have to live this close to the edge would make sense), but it certainly sounds like a bad experience.

Often times admissions officers like to know why a semester is missing from your high school transcript. I think this is a good idea. Your essay needs some polish but I think you will do fine.

It's great! It explains that part in your life that the colleges want to know about and it's not already on your transcript/application (I mean the reason).

I would tell them only if the topic is related to that, but I definitely don't think it's an excuse I just think you should wait for the right time to tell them.
