CRT and LCD, go with a ViewSonic. You can't go wrong with a ViewSonic. They have a long reputation for being one of the best. I've personally owned two and if I have to buy another monitor it will be a ViewSonic. My Hitachi monitor was of decent quality but the thing stopped working after a year and a half. Look up reviews of ViewSonic before you make a decision.

Beginning with the Blue and white G3 PowerMac and continuing on from then (to the PowerMac G4, G5, and the Mac Pro and Mac Mini) you can use any standard PC monitor with a Mac. The older Macs had a video card with a standard VGA (DB-15) connector, while newer Macs have DVI.

LG and Samsung for LCDs

Not many CRTs around these days. NEC used to be good.
