A homogeneous mixture of sodium chloride (a compound) and water, another compound. No chemical reaction takes place between sodium chloride and water. It is hence a mixture and since the solution has an uniform concentration, it is homogeneous.

Homogeneous mixture. The sodium chloride is dispersed throughout the mixture (solution). It is not a compound.

Solutions are homogeneous mixtures because they look consistent, no differing colors or layers, everything distributed evenly.
Compounds are actually elements chemically bonded together. However, mixtures and compounds are different. When you mix salt with water, you can evaporate the water to get the salt, proving that they are not chemically bonded because they are separable by physical means.
