Start with C. Where do you begin?

Well, the point of a science fair is to teach students to understand how to use the scientific method.

Start with a question. Since you want to find out the effects of ash on the environment, let's make that into a question.

Now "How does wildfire ash affect the environment" is a good question, but it's really too broad for you to answer with a science fair project.

Instead, narrow down the question. For example, what would you mean by "affect" and "environment?" Ash can affect plant growth or pH of water and soil. Environment can pertain to things like air quality and soil quality.

A good example question would be: "How does wildfire ash affect soil pH?"

You write your hypothesis based on your question. How do YOU think ash affects soil pH? A hypothesis could be, "I believe wildfire ash raises soil pH."

B. then you design your experiment. You would have to measure the pH of soil that has ash in it. Then you'd have to figure out if this is normal. That means you measure the pH of soil without ash in it.

Compare your results and conclude. When you have your conclusion, you tell us WHY this is important. For example, if ash raises soil pH, this could be good for new plants and animals. If it's good, it could be an environmental improvement. Don't take this as truth, it's just an example. I odn't know how ash affects soil pH or if that's good for plants or not. Your experiment and research should help you with that.

The best thing to do would be to go to the library and start doing some background research. This will give you a better platform on which you can build your experiment and formulate your hypothesis.

You are going to want to test for one variable; for example, the effect of wildfire ash on the growth of a certain plant that would grow in that environment. You could then formulate a hypothesis based on what you found out while doing your background research. You would then present your results, discuss them, and come to a conclusion. During the conclusion, you will have the opportunity to suggest further research that will provide a fuller picture of how wildfire ash affects the environment (for example, the effect that wildfire ash has on the growth and development of frogs).

Pick a different project. You can't effectively show the effects of wildfire ash on the environment in the time allotted for a science fair project.
What effect of wildfire ash on plant growth? Of course you need some wildfire ash and a type of plant

Try building a terrarium to test your hypothesis. http://www.instructorweb.com/lesson/maketerrarium.asp

Make sure you also do a control. As for the ash, I have no idea where you plan to get it, but good luck! Sounds like a great project.
