They enable you to view objects that are too tiny to view with the naked eye. A good microscopist can use them to identify pathogenic microorganisms that are contaminants in water. Microscopes are also useful in metallurgy to determine the crystalline structur of metals to determine structural fatigue, in bacteriology to identify bacteria, in botany to determine plant diseases and types, in medicine to determine morphology of tissue samples, in cytology to determine abnormalities in cellular formation. There are at least a million different uses for Microscopes and they are used in more than just the field of Biology, as well.

Because they show the details. Things look a whole lot different when you can actually see them close up.

Besides, without microscopes, we wouldn't have the germ theory of disease, doctors would still be calling Lister a crackpot and washing your hands before surgery would be optional.
