What does the expression "bite me" really mean, and what is its origin?

It's a shortened form of "Bite my @ss." I'd say it's a 20th century Americanism.

I don't remember the origin; it's really not that old of a saying! Hmmmm now I'm gonna be trying to remember when/where I first heard it!

People just say that nasty phrase to those who really tick them off. It is like they get the last word in an arguement. I don't know where it came from, but it is pretty rude in my book.
