I lived just across the Hudson River in New Jersey at the time of the 9/11 attacks, and although I did not see the actual planes crash into the Twin Towers, I did see the thick black smoke rising from where the buildings had stood in late morning--about 11 AM after both towers had collapsed. The STARK REALITY of someone daring to attack my country, and the helpless feeling that I could do nothing and the sadness for the thousands who died will haunt my conscience and is burned into my memory for the rest of my life.

I lived and went to school in a part of Brooklyn that is very close to Manhattan (Brooklyn bridge). Everyone had to evacuate. It smell like burnt metal and debris was everywhere. When i saw it on the television, it was scary and surreal.
