1. a) CH3(CH2)2CO [OH-H] NHCH2CH3 ===> CH3(CH2)2CONHCH2CH3 The brackets, [ ] go around the HOH of water, showing how dehydration forms the amide with the splitting out of water.

d. ethanol (ethyl alcohol) + pentanoic acid (valeric acid) ===>

2. a) butyl ethanoate (butyl acetate) + water ===> butanol + acetaic acid (ethanoic acid?)

c) CH3(CH2)4CONHCH3 + H2O ===> methylamine + hexanoic acid (caproic acid?)

Where do you go to school? Patrick Henry University? A cathedral school in the middle ages?
