Historically, in the US, 3rd, 4th, and 5th parties etc, have not succeeded. This has occurred because of the type of constitution we have. In countries where there is a parliamentary style of government, minority parties can survive by forming coalitions with other minority parties, and elect a prime minister. This occurs when there is no majority party. Parliament chooses the governing executive.

In the US the president is not chosen by congress but by electoral choice of the people. Since the electoral college is chosen by the people of each state, and the candidate who wins a state gets all the electors of that state, minor parties seldom win more than one or two states (usually no states are won.) Another thing, if a third party begins to show strength, the major parties begin to steal the platform of the 3rd party.

There have been exceptions. When the Republican party was founded, there was a strong desire for an anti-slavery party. That was the basis of the Republican party. It destroyed the Whig party.

Yes, they already control the Democrats and the Republicans. The only way to get a decent choice is to have more than one Party.I think it shouldn't be decided by how much money you earned for your campaign, everyone running should have the same amount of money to spend. No more lies told on TV to discredit your opponent. We should know how each candidate feels about all the issues, about their family, history and be able to watch them on talk shows. These debates are ridiculous. If they choose they keep calling on the same people and asking stupid questions to those they don't like.
