According to a report I read on Yahoo! News, a woman was verbally and physically attacked for being gay. (read the report here - http://tv.yahoo.com/show/38481/news/urn:newsml:tv.ap.org:20070912:top_chef_beating__ER )

Now my question is, how do you feel about this? How do you think the people attacking Josie Smith-Malave should be delt with? Would you considder this a hate crime? And if you were there when someone was being attacked for being gay, would you step in and defend them?

I would defend them, because there is no need for this. I think the attackers should be treated the same way others would if they were attacking someone for their race. Everyone has their own lifestyles to live, and it is not your place to step in on SOMEONE ELSE'S life and try to do something about it. If it doesn't concern you, don't bother. Thanks for your answers.

By the way, I'm not gay personally, but I don't mind gay or bi people one single bit. They've never done anything to bother me, so I wont either. I still wouldn't then anyway. I agree, there is too much violence in the world and we all need to stop just for the sake of man kind. If the meak are those who inherit all the Earth, I am truely worried.

Dear Michelle,
I'm not surprised. I'm sickened and outraged but not surprised.
I also don't hold out a lot of hope that any arrests will be made. The heterosexual community at large, Including most law officers, don't see gay bashing as a "real crime".
as fair as I'm concerned these "heterosexuals" need to spend the next 3 years locked in an 8 by 12 with Bubba.
As to the question of my defending her? It's not a question. I worked as a bouncer for 14 months in the only "alternative club" in my home town. My favorite old Louisville slugger to the crotch and the fight ends.
Hugs,
PennyAnn

Attacking someone for his/her sexual orientation is a hate crime just like attacking someone for being Baptist is a hate crime.

Anti-gay hate crimes are examples of the fruits of homophobia. Homophobia is a sin and leads to all kinds of harmful, vicious actions. Chrst told us that "bad fruit cannot come from a good tree." Anti-gay hate crimes are "bad fruit" and due to the fact that homophobia is immoral.

The fact that someone would answer this question by blaming the gay person shows how tightly some people are wrapped up in the sin of homophobia.

awww, I feel so bad for Josie, she was such a fun chef on that tv show. That's definitely a hate crime, which is what the Hate Crimes Bill is meant to prevent...unfortunately idiots like George Bush are against this because? well, for no good reason. IF I was there, I would've been helping josie definitely.

Third in gets the worse penalty. I used to jump in, but learned the hard way it is not wise to do that. Better to be a witness and support the woman in her recovery Sounds like the woman was assaulted, and it should be treated as a crime.

as quickly because it grow to be a common perception, very corresponding to this one, that a black guy and white woman should not be married. church homes refused to marry a black guy to a white woman the comparable way they oppose gay marriage now. i do no longer fairly see a distinction and that i think of after a decade of gay marriage being criminal, people who destructive this is going to start to experience embarrassed in simple terms as segregation is an embarrassing area of our previous now.

Yes - I believe this is a hate crime.
Yes - I would step and help anyone that was getting physically assaulted. I can't imagine not doing that.

I believe we are here (on this earth) to care for one another.

I most definitely would've defended her against this hate crime. I hate people who can't keep their damn hands to themselves. Us being gay is a silly reason to get attacked!
