What's you're mascot?
What extracairrular activity is making the float? (Can't have the HomeEc Dept. bein' all violent.....unless you are into that kind of thing)

Archers shooting the Hawks down
Hawks confounded by a trap
Larger preditor taking the Hawk down
OOOh, what about the Hawks confused by a Math problem

Hmm Funny you should bring this up. My senior homecoming game was against the warhawks and the winning float design (by yours truely) had a theme of "Shoot the Bird". Our floats were on little red wagons but you could up size as needed. We built half a football field with a goalpost. We mounted a hawk to the goal post and dressed a teddy bear in a school helmet and jersey pointing a toy rifle at the bird. It was a big hit. With schools up tight about guns (We used to bring guns to school to go hunting afterwards) A cannon would be way cooler. If you're doing a larger float you probably need to go bigger anyway. Hope this helps and good luck.

You might find some help for ideas at this site. If nothing else, you will be able to get supplies to cover the float.
