it is probably written as 6-3 1/8

Anyway....first, you have to make a fraction out of 3 1/8. It is done like that:
3 1/8=(3*8+1)/8 = 25/8
So, you have to calculate 6-(25/8)=(common denominator)=(48-25)/8=23/8

Turn both numbers into fractions - 6/1 - 3 1/8
Then you need to turn the 3 1/8 into an improper fraction (3x8=24, 24+1=25 so the improper fraction is 25/8).

Now you have 6/1 - 25/8. Find a common denominator, which is 8. Change the 6/1 to 48/8 then subtract 48/8 - 25/8 which is 23/8. Then you can write your answer as the mixed number 2 7/8 because 23 divided by 8 = 2 with a remainder of 7.
Hopefully that makes a little bit of sense.
