The number one seed in each league is seeded against the WC team, UNLESS the WC team happens to be in the same division. Then the number one seed gets the number 3 seed and the number 2 seed gets the WC. For example, right now in the AL the seeds are: 1-Boston, 2-Los Angeles, 3-Cleveland 4 (WC)-New York. So the pairing would be: Boston vs Cleveland and Los Angeles vs New York because the Yankees and Red Sox are in the same division. Hope this helps.

The three division winners per league are seeded 1, 2, 3 based upon season record. Tiebreaker methods exist if necessary. The wildcard team, the best record among second-place teams across the league, is seeded #4 regardless of its record.
Division Series matchups are 1-4 and 2-3 unless the wildcard team and the #1 seed are from the same division. In that case, matchups are 1-3 and 2-4. The DS is best 3-of-5, with the higher seed getting homefield for Games 1, 2, and 5.
The League Championship Series is best 4-of-7, with the higher seed getting homefield for Games 1, 2, 6, 7.
The World Series matches up the two league champions in another best 4-of-7, in 2-3-2 format, with Game 1 homefield predetermined, going to the representative team from the league that won the summer's All-Star Game.
