Is it possible to find a good laptop for under 500, and if so, what brands are the ones to look for?

NEVER buy a used laptop. There is simply too much that goes wrong with a computer that is thrown around in bags for its whole life.

I would recommend the IBM T Series (T4x models). They're sturdy, reliable, and good to look at if you like black boxy laptops.

Use Craigslist or something so you can check out the laptop before you buy it though. Ebay would be a bad idea.

or you can just buy a new laptop, they're dirt cheap and falling in price

Suggest you try Dell and HP. You will have to check often because good deals go fast. My sister-in-law got a terrific deal from Dell, refurbished, and loaded with software - but you just have to hit it right.
