I hate essays, I just got finished with one, but that's not what advise i have for you. In my opinion, it actually depends on the situation, like sometimes the truth is better left unsaid, and sometimes, like if you started a rumor, and people knew it was you, but just wanted you to admit it, it is better to tell the truth, and apologize. If you don't tell the truth you have to live with the guilt of knowing you lied.

Telling the truth saves time and stress. You don't have to back track to keep the lies covered. If you are in a situation where telling the truth would be unnecessarily hurtful, tact is the skill that will help you dance around saying what that truth was. When pushed against the wall for the truth however, I think it is best to say it and get it over with. Wounds heal faster with the truth than with a festering lie.

YES !!!
I know that society in general accepts "white lies" as being OK, but they aren't.
The problem? People are so used to thinking that everyone lies, so if anyone tells the truth, they think you are lying.
Look at a $1 bill...there is no silver or gold to back up the dollar. All the dollar's worth is based on is faith. Faith that the next person will accept it. Faith that the person after that will accept it. Once people lose faith in the currency, it has no value.
And, faith in currency (or anything else) means NOT LYING FOR ANY REASON!

It's Germany, early 1940's. You're hiding some Jews in your house to protect them from being sent to a death camp. An SS officer knocks on your door and asks you if you've seen any Jews around. I think THAT would be a good time to lie, and say no.
There are times when lying is ok, namely whenever telling the truth would do more harm to others. Lying for personal gain is NOT ok.
Still, there is a moral hazard with lying, and that's when you're lying for personal gain but you convince yourself that you're lying for the good of others. A lot of politicians are guilty of this, for instance when one votes for a pork project and says it's for the good of his district (and maybe even believes it) when in fact it's to curry favor for his own re-election.

According to AA.
You only tell the truth as long as it doesn't harm the person to do so.
So, the example would be, if you cheat on your husband or wife. Your not supposed to tell them.
Probably 50% of the population can handle that kind of guilt, maybe less.

Most people don't think so but think of all the problems that people develop by not telling the truth. Besides truth is never embarrassing but lies are. Also if you are dishonest then you do not have integrity.

No, as in the case of telling someone your negative opinion of their actions, style, looks, whatever. Further, what you consider the truth might not be to everyone else. If you tell Mrs. Jones her ratsass husband is cheating, is this a good thing? She probably sensed he was and prefers to live in denial.

I suppose it depends if your trying to spare someone's elses feelings. That pertainting to gossip.
If it s a legal matter yes you should.
If you like me, you just tell the truth because it comes back to haunt you. To me the truth can be painfully honest.
But remember there is my truth , your truth , and the truth.

Lets face it, the truth hurts. A good guidline is to think what you would want. For instance, if you want to pursue a career in dancing, would you rather be told your bad (and you are) or good. In most cases however, the truth is better.
