I would STILL put a password - because your neighbours on the other side, above you, and below you could ALL be using your router without your knowledge ;););););)

You should have a disk, either from your IP provider or with the wireless hardware/software package that lets you set up a password for your pc and for the router, this stops other people hacking into it. This is the network key. Read your help files for setting up a wireless network. This is normally done with the help of the disks I mentioned, or through the Network Settings in your Control Panel (also right click on the wireless connection on your taskbar).
Your computer is more at risk because you are using an open connection rather than a neibor hacking into it - if they can, anyone can. You can share the network key with them, if you want to but at least you then know who has access to it.

Read everyone above who is telling you to secure your wireless and do it NOW!..
You said "but we don't have any networking between our laptops" that simply is not true. If you and he are using the same "wireless" system YOU ARE NETWORKED. That is the way it works. The only difference between a wired network and a wireless network is you don't have a WIRE between the machines. He is pulling an IP address from your router, that puts him on YOUR NETWORK!
Here is a great article on the hazards for YOU of running an OPEN wireless system.
http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/08/01/Web-apps-over-Wi-Fi-put-data-at-risk_1.html?source=NLC-WIR&cgd=2007-08-02
Basically when you connect wirelessly without any encryption you are sending ALL your data out into the world for ANYONE to read. So do yourself a favor and LOCK DOWN your system!
You only have to enter your "pass phrase or password" ONE TIME on your computer , it will keep it so there is no reason not to password your wireless.

The 4Mbps rate is the rate of the external connection through your ISP to the modem they gave you. The operation of your G (or N for that matter) router is entirely independent of this. The wired internal network speeds are 10/100/1000 depending on the capablity of your wire network and the wireless is 54 or less depending on how many walls, floors and other junk are between you and the router.

you need to go to your router settings on the internet and make sure you are secured. You need to change your routers password and change any settings that make it a secured wireless connection. type in your routers address 192.168.1.1 to make the changes.

Yes he could access your data if he knew how, and if you knew how you could find out what he does when he comes in. best way is to encrypt your data.
"Tbenn" you must be American, or you'd say "you are" instead of "your".
