I never considered bands like Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Rush, Black Sabbath or Blue Oyster Cult to be metal, but it seems like many people do. To me, metal is Metallica, Megadeth, Dream Theater and Opeth.
Is it just me?
What do you consider metal?

Vera C, I don't think it's an age thing, I grew up on errrr Bubblegum pop (hehe...). Maybe it was because I listened to bands like Metallica and Megadeth before I got into Deep Purple, BOC and Rush.

Yep, I guess Sabbath is metal, but I'll never agree to Zeppelin being metal (they have to many acoustic songs to be a metal band for me)

Sabbath is metal... they are considered the founding fathers of the genre.

Deep purple, Led Zepplen, ACDC, Rush, BOC, Def Leppard were considered Hard Rock and sometimes even classic rock.

Heavy Metal went to Black Sabbath, Priest, MegaDeath, Motley Crue, Iron Maiden, Cinderella, Slayer, Tesla, Queensryche, Kingdom Come, GnR, etc.

I agree. AC/DC, Blue Oyster Cult and Deep Purple I define as hard rock. Rush is progressive and Led Zeppelin is too bluesy to be metal. If any of them are metal, it would be Black Sabbath.

I agree with you -- I think of Deep Purple, Led Zep and the other bands that you mention to be "Hard Rock"

And, yup, metal to me is Metallica and the other bands you mention.

I wonder if it is an age group kind of thing? I grew up with the first group of music and back then it was just rock, no metal.

Either way all of the bands you mention are great in my opinion.

I agree completely. There's tons and tons of genres of metal nowadays that I can see where your confusion in attaching a genre to a particular band would occur. (Old) Metallica and Megadeth are straightforward thrash metal bands, whereas Dream Theater (my all time favorite band) and Opeth are progressive metal. And Opeth leans toward more death metal influences, clearly indicated in their vocals. There's many other genres, such as grindcore, doom, sludge, black, folk, viking, pagan, etc. These are endlessly combined for an unlimited amount of combinations, too.

I agree for the most part. All those except Black Sabbath struck me more as rock and even Sabbath was a bit rock. Your metal is also what I consider metal.

You are 100% right, and KISS is NOT metal!! They are hard rock. Black Sabbath was metal though, and Deep Purple was a major influence of the metal genre.

The main difference between metal and hard rock is that metal is generally more distorted, tuned lower, and heavier. Metal is stuff like Dethklok, Children of Bodom, Arch Enemy, Rhapsody of Fire, and Three Inches of Blood. Vocals are gerenally raspy (though that's by no means a requirement) and the guitar is played fast and powerful.

oh my.....multifaceted question.............let's see

to me, metal encompasses so many bands and what was once metal seems very tame to what it is today.......it has grown so much from the founding and early bands such as Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin (in certain instances), Judas Priest, Deep Purple.......to the innovators ( Alice Cooper, Iron Maiden, Metrallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth, etc.....), and today's generation.

Metal to me is............(only partial list)

Sepultura
Pantera
Death
Morbid Angel
Ministry
Alice In Chains
Rainbow
Motorhead
Queensryche
GnR
Type O Negative
Cannibal Corpse

***sonja....its okay, everyone has their own opinions.......to each his/her own......***

hard rock is a heavier rock and roll
METAL or "heavy metal" basically is classed when the majority of the artists sounds are HARD and LOUD
metallica is metal, but they border on thrash. at least their older stuff does.
a good band like metallica, rush, sabbath, etc will border on other kinds of music, that is what makes them great and unique
clear as mud?
