I was talking to somebody who said that they doesn't like Tom Petty because he sounds too much like Bob Dylan. I have never made that connection before. Does he really sound like Bob? If so, how exactly?

I just realized a grammatical error..."somebody who said that they *don't* like..."

My husband jokes Tom Petty is Dylan's illegitimate son as he thinks they sound and kinda look so much alike. I do not agree; although Petty definitely wears his Dylan influence on his sleeve (as well as Springsteen). Petty does have a nasally tone to his voice and and does evoke Bob at times. Listen to some Traveling Wilbury's and listen to the two of them harmonize, a good example would be Handle With Care as they sing the chorus.

Also on the LP and cassette version of Wildflowers- Petty named side one and two- Side #12 and Side #35 (Rainy Day Woman).

Not to me Bob Dylan is more folk than Tom Petty

Well, Tom petty does have a slightly nasal voice that is similar to Dylan's (like in Money Becomes King) but musicwise, I think the two sound very different.

In writing style, I think they are. But in singing, Tom Petty is a hell of a lot better than Bob Dylan. Tom can make his voice do whatever he wants it to--something that Dylan can't claim. Dylan has one sound--pure nasal. Tom can have the nasal voice too, but you can actually understand him when he uses it! lol....
