Interesting question.
On the Zzyzx Rd exit is (now) a place for geologists to study (students). But, (i've been there), did you know that this was also a place for the stars to go for a retreat? There are old 'mud baths' right out in the open (they are not used anymore). The baths could also be used for salt baths, as Zzyzx is in the middle of Death Valley.
So anyway, the guy that founded this retreat place was Dr. Zzyzx.

A bunch of River Rats were on their way to the lake and they were drinking it up in this motorhome while towing their ski boat. One of the drunk guys in the motorhome saw a cop on the side of the road and slurred "zzyzx a cop!". The cop was fortunately in a food coma and napping after eating so many donuts so he didn't see the speeding motor home fly by him.
When the River Rats reached the lake they told stories about how they thwarted the cops along zzyzx road and the story spread like wildfire and the county was forced to name the road zzyzx because of all kinds of political pressure.
