I am thinking of buying this necklace and the description says this, some of the words may be from the united kingdom.

The gold layer is one micron thick...the thinnest it can be.

Then lacquer protects the micron thick layer so it doesn't rub off.

It means that it is cheap metal thinly plated with gold then sprayed with lacquer to stop the gold rubbing off. If you want a good necklace pay a little more for real gold rather than gold plate
