Is the Klu Klux Klan still influential in the South; my wife and I will be taking a vacation in the Deep South

from Denmark and we are worried about the influx of Mexicans that are apparantly there, will white people be safe to travel?

...As a southerner, I can assure you the Klan has very little political power. They don't get much respect. That isn't to say that racism and bigotry don't exist here, as they do in every other area of the planet. Yes, there are quite a few Latinos who have moved here to make a better life for themselves. You have nothing to fear. But please don't judge us by events that happened 40 years ago, and if you are coming here, please do so with an open mind.

I live in the South and have traveled extensively and have never seen nor heard any reference to the klan. As for "Mexicans", they are everywhere, legal and otherwise, but not a concern. So many people have a skewed view and perception of the South. There is some racial tension but it's not like many would have you believe. One of the reasons race becomes a factor here is because there are actually blacks and whites living in the same cities. Other than the urban areas (NY< BOST< PHIL< DET) my experience and demographics have shown that the North lacks the numbers of blacks compared to the South. So simply put, no you wont have a problem. Now if you go someplace North...well, I hear they're all rude and will kill you. So it must be true.
-edit- Why is it that people think that small towns only exist in the South? (Don't you watch Gilmore Girls) To say that, "everybody knows each other", and "if someone knew (new) comes around its a buzz.." Yea, I'm sure that happens in mid-state NY or an hour outside of Chicago..

The Klan does not hold significant influence as they once did. Yes, the Klan is still around. I have an uncle who is a member but they aren't respected or much approved up as they once were. Needless to say, I no longer talk or see my uncle since I married a black man but they are around and do have meetings etc. In the deep south, you may not see as many diverse cultures as you will in the bigger cities. The deep south is where everyone knows each other and all that goes on. If anyone knew comes around then that will be the buzz around town. You will get great southern hospitality in small towns over the larger cities. Alot of family owned, "mom & pop" type stores where things are very warm and personable verses big city stores with numerous employees. As for the Mexicans, not sure...just depends on what part of the deep south you're going to.

I lived in the south for awhile. It's a little slow (so be prepared), but some of the nicest people you want to meet (southern hospitality still exists).

As far as the KKK, yeah they still exist, but it's not as if they're hanging out on every street corner south of the mason dixon. If you stick to the larger cities (and large is a relative term in the south) you should be fine...oh and fyi, north or south, you're going to run in many idfferent cultures, ethnicities and nationalies in the US (not just Mexicans)

So do you want the KKK to be there to "protect" you from Mexican's or what? No, the KKK is not influential anywhere anymore. And what the hell are you exactly worried about? You think mexicans are going to come get you because you are white or something? Mexicans could care less about some stupid pale foreigners. White people and people of all colors are safe to travel in the south or anywhere in the US. This has to be one of the stupidest questions; I thought you pretentious eurotrash were supposed to be more open minded and tolerant of other cultures. Figures, the Dutch are not very smart people.

Its pretty safe almost everywhere. There are some high crime areas in our big cities but if you stay in highly populated areas and tourist places you will be fine.

The KKK is still very much alive, but haven't been in the spotlight in recent years.
