On an electric or acoustic folk guitar durning the tuning keys in a counter clockwise direction will cause the string to tighten and get higher in pitch. Turning the other way will cause them to get looser and lower in pitch.

If you have a six string guitar the notes you're trying to get, from the lowest bass note to the highest pitched are :
E - 6th string (lowest pitch)
A - 5th string
D - 4th string
G - 3rd string
B - 2nd string
E - 1st string (highest pitch)

If you have a 7 string guitar, the 7th string might be tuned to "B". However I would suggest tuning it to the note "A" (one tone lower than "B" and an octave lower than the 5th string.

Most models of the Korg tuner has a centering needle as well as lights on either side of the dial with the needle. The closest note to the pitch you've sounded will show up on an LED screen. If the pitch for the note shown is a little flat, the needle will be to the left of center. If the pitch for the note shown is a little high, the needle will be to the right of the center.

Note that It's hard to describe sound to a beginner for the purpose of tuning. It's better to get a teacher to help you learn to tune.

What you're describing could also be a setup hindrance. The movement and intonation of your guitar have plenty to do with it staying in song. If you haven't had the movement and intonation setup I could incredibly recommend it. You can be a lot happier with how your awl performs and holds song. If you're on account that new tuners, get the form that lock. Schaler and Grover each make first-rate tuners. Good success and Play on!
