Thanks to you helpful people, I have bought a new thermostat for my car and I'm going to try replacing that to see if it solves the overheating problem in my car.

So...how do I get the old thermostat out? It is stuck in there pretty tight...do I grab it with a pliers and pull forcefully, or pry it with a screwdriver, or...?

Thanks for your help...please advise ASAP as I have a job interview I need to get to if possible, and this is my only vehicle...

Well, it can't just fall out because it has to be pulled out, straight up. And it IS stuck in there, very very tightly. I'm not experienced in working on cars and I don't want to start hitting things and damage something...anyone else have ideas?

i had to change one of these not long ago in one i had. what i done was i took a screw driver and slid it through the top part of it and just pushed up on it lightly 2 or 3 times and it popped out. but putting them back in can be tricky because they have to go back down in there so far before they will seal and before the radiator cap will go back on. i had to turn mine a certain way and push down to get it to seal back in the right place.

The old thermostat should almost fall out, it should not be stuck in there tight at all. If it is stuck, a slight tap should free it. There shouldn't be a lot of force necessary to remove the thermostat.

My apologies. This type of thermostat does require a bit of force to yank out. You can use a pair of pliers to pull it out, but be careful not to use excessive force or you'll break the handle. Then, it's a real pain to remove.

Use a pair of pliers that is as wide as possible. If you can get a pair of channel locks on them, then wiggle it around. Once free, it will pop out.

Do not use oil to lubricate it, but you can use a small amount of antifreeze to give it a little bit of lubrication to free it.

Good luck. Those thermostats were a real pain to get out.

not sure why its stuck, try to use plyers and be easy turn it left then right see if it gives. If not, try to pull up on it, if it stil does not give, squirt some penetrating oil around the seal, let it soak overnight try again.
