Let's see what the answer is:
10(y-1)=y+4
10y-10=y+4
9y=14
y=14/9
So the answer wasn't 14/11 but actually 14/9

Check the way you're +/- on your equation. Should get 14/9, then reduce it. Did you distribute the 10 to both the y AND the -1?

You are studying algebra because, if you design an airplane or spaceship where I am the passenger, I want to feel safe. Also algebra teaches you how to think. It is not a new science. People were using it over 2,000 years ago. You, a modern man ought to be able to master it. If you are weak in some endeavor, you will excel in it, if you put as much effort into it, as you put into those things you like to do. Never give up. You can do it.

there's no need for reciprocal or anything, just distribute10 on the left side so the equation now looks like this:
10y-10=y+4
then combine like-terms and make sure the y is on one side, so you should get:
9y=14
then divide by 9 to get the y all by itself so the answer is:
y=14/9

10(y-1)=y+4
10y-10=y+4
add 10 to both side
10y=y+14
subtract y
9y=14
divide by 9
y=14/9

let's see (1.) 10y-10=y+4 (2.) subtract "y" from each side, 9y-10=4 (3.) Add ten to each side 9y=14 (4.) divide.. soooo 9/14
