I have had trouble putting it into reverse a bit, not really bad, but it makes a grinding sound.

I was told by the Toyota dealer that it would be best to find a used transmission for my 93 Toyota T100 4x4 truck than to have them repair the bearing. (As he told me this would be like 15 hours labor)

Is he correct?

How long do you think I could drive it like it is now?

He's probably right. Get a reconditioned gearbox. Only a couple of hours to fit. Stripping and repairing a gearbox does take hours and hours.

Additional: In the UK (where I am and where I'm reading this from) they are called gearboxes.

Is a grinding noise putting it into reverse the only problem? This is common on manual gearboxes, I would suggest adjusting or replacing the clutch cable or if it has a hydraulic clutch, bleed it. Try pressing the clutch and wait a few seconds before engaging reverse. See if this helps (the shafts in the gearbox may still be turning, pressing the clutch for a few seconds should stop this). And NEVER select reverse while the car is still moving. All this sounds like to me is the clutch isn't clearing properly through adjustment or pilot error or the clutch pressure plate may be sticking on the splines. Or it may just need new oil in the gearbox. Even if you have to replace the clutch it's a lot cheaper than taking the gearbox to bits to fix a fault that isn't there!

Are you sure your clutch is releasing. If you have a hydraulic clutch I would suspect that is the problem. If only hard in reverse I would not expect a bearing unless there were other problems shifting in other gears. Stay away from dealers, they know the least and charge the most. Find a transmission shop or a good mechanic that has a shop. Ask a few friends about a good, honest shop. NEVER replace any part till you know the problem.

Gear Box can be used as another name for a Transmission.

Yes it's a big job to do to rebuild a transmission. Which is what they would be doing. They will remove the transmission and open it up and replace what needs to be replaced.

Try going to a Transmission Specialist and see how much they would do it for? They might be cheaper.

I am not sure which bearing you are talking about. With drive trains, there are quite a few different bearings, as well as inside the transmission.

If you need a new/repair, take a look at this site:

Lots of good info on toyota manual transmissions. Give them a call or email them, I'm sure they can help you out with some advise.

Change the fluid out, see if there are any metal shavings or things like that in the oil. I use redline MT-90 synthetic oil in my transmission and it made things shift much smoother than standard oil.

Like others said, make sure you have enough clutch fluid and it has been properly bled.

A very big deal. If you didn't have the gearbox overhauled at this stage, you would definitely need a new gearbox in no time at all.
