I just recharged the air on my 91 Sonoma and discovered that the ac pump is only working part time it will spin a half a turn then stop like it is locking up and in a min it does it again and it will keep doing that, any suggestions?

the compressor is not locking up as the compressors clutch would not release under this condition and would burn off the belt or the clutch itself. It has to be a pressure cycling switch likely the low pressure switch that is cycling the compressor on and off. If it was the high pressure switch as in an overcharged system or a blockage of some sort the compressor would run for a short while 1 minute or even several minutes until the pressure built up to the limit and then stop the compressor. So I would recheck this system for a leak and I think that after you find it your problems will be over.

vince got it pretty good. How did you charge the system. Do you have manifold set. Was the system empty before recharge, that is no pressure at all. The low side should be brought down to about 25 psi with engine running and a/c on. It sounds like you have a low charge and this is cycling the comp.

Your A/C clutch maybe sticking.

Or the bearing has worn out.

You can try some lube to see if it unsticks itself, but I doubt it will work.
