the car can be drive for a fair distance and all the sudden it will die, it will start back up after a while and do the same thing, you cant hit the gas when it starts to die and save it, so is the fuel ump going out or is there something in the tank that is plunging the line and then backing off?????

As a former Ford mechanic you can't just answer that one wothout investigating this in person.
There has to be fuel tests made on the car to rule in or out the fuel pump.
This could also be an ignition related problem in regards to the module and stator.
It could also be related to a chafed wire or someother unseen gremlin..
The car must be scanned over for codes and as I said earlier have test run on the ignition and fuel circuits.

It is a little difficult not knowing the year of your car. I will guess it.s in th 90's or newer. You need to look at the fuel pressure control and also do a fuel pressure check on the system. don't blame the pump or filter. NEVER replace any part till you know the problem. I would say you have a fuel problem. Check that before massing with the ignition. I would suggest you find an honest shop and DON"T go to a dealer

sounds like it might be your fuel filter...it should be near your rear tire on the inside frame rail looks like the size of a can of soda
