It is a rumor, would never happen. Think about it, everyone who does not ride a bike gets 0mpg sitting idle on the highways. The liberals who believe that California causes global warming would want to encourage everybody to ride a motorcycle. This myth is debunked!

Additional Details:
Great response DanEGood. B-Bunny is partially correct. During the early days of emission testing, motorcycles had much better numbers than cars but after some rigorous number crunching it was discovered that motorcycles stuck behind cars in traffic were worse than cars. Obviously modern day motorcycles do not have this problem. But it still holds true that if we all rode 2 people per motorcycle to work instead of 1 person per 7-seater SUV then SMOG would be greatly reduced. There needs to be more encouragement from our law makers to reduce traffic congestion.

On another note, the exception to the law that permits, a single occupant in a 4-seater electric car, full use of the HOV lanes is absolutely ridiculous. Time and time again I see carpoolers stuck behind these cars that can barely push 60 MPH. They are major contributors to increased traffic congestion which is a direct cause of increase pollution. Yes, I said it, electric cars equals pollution, bad legislature, bad! I do not even ride in the HOV lane anymore, I am much safer lane-splitting between the number one and two lanes. Again, with more motorcycles we would not have this problem.

Slayer06, this is Y!A, not makeup your own inaccurate information, please keep that to yourself. By the way, it is possible we may see more options on the helmets we wear or lack of a helmet as the case may very well be. The pending case, if you're interested, is CHP vs Superior Court rpi Quigley. http://appellatecases.courtinfo.ca.gov/search/case/dockets.cfm?dist=6&doc_id=286282&doc_no=H029406

Additional Details:
That is a good one peter m. I would absolutely be in support of an anti-lane-splitting bill if it were amended to include a pro-“Ural look like WWII Wehrmacht Motorcycle and wear SS uniform with dummy machinegun” resolution attached to it. ~ LOL ~ That would be the perfect answer to the problem and a fun one at that. Just as you put it, I would not need to lane-split anymore when they’re all falling off of the road to get away. http://motorcyclecity.com/Military-bikes/ural-military.htm

I hadn't heard that.
Lane splitting is specifically against the law in New Hampshire, and I agree with that. Read more before you get mad. We do not have the congestion here that you do there, so there really is no need of it. It would be very dangerous to do that here because motorcycles are not respected as vehicles. While it is legal for two motorcycles to share a lane here, we may not share with any other vehicle. Yet, many times I have a car trying to climb into my lane with me.

WoW

This is a true case of the have's and the have not's!

Everyone lane splits everywhere in Europe and woe betide any politician dumb enough to try and stop people.

It's more about respect for other road users and having "fun" is a by product.

I have been riding and splitting lanes since I started ridin in 1975 in California. Splitting lanes keeps traffic moving so it reduces pollution. People who are angry because bikers split lanes are just jealous they can't go any faster.

I have been spit on, had cigarettes thrown at me, been squeezed, and had doors open on me. All of which is against the law and lane splitting is NOT.

BTW, BostonBoy, California has the safest drivers per mile than any State and now I see why. I got to where I could see a person's attitude by looking at their eyes in their rear view mirror.

I searched the Internet for a law change but didn't see anything. I will keep an eye out for that, too.

Don't cyclists do that in rush hour to prevent over heating of their bikes and to make it easier on the cyclists body? It seems like it shouldn't get overturned to me. I'm not from CA and I don't ride, but as someone who has driven there a ton, it is a bit unsettling when you are not expeting it. As long as there is a good rational for keeping the law, I don't think it should be changed.

It does suck if they do pass that law. The reason I split lanes is because my MC is air cooled. Keeping it moving keeps the engine cooler. I hate when cagers try to be law enforcement and attempt to squeeze you. That is what should be illegal!!

sure - that grew to become right into a actual hoot - I enjoyed it - fairly with the quick unexpected clipped one line ending. ROTFALMFAO. yet truly - in case you think of roughly it, that may not "undesirable information." i'd desire to appreciate that i'd be going to heaven - yet no longer so quickly. I even have too lots unfinished enterprise down right here that i'd desire to end first..

That does suck. makes no sense to sit in slug traffic when you got a place to go and can get there, being one less piece of scrap iron sitting there making fumes and taking up space. Cagers just dont look at it that way though, it's all about you getting in front of them.
Hope it aint real.

That would suck, hopefully ABATE is on it. They usually do a pretty good job of getting the word out and circulating petitions, but this is the first I've heard about this.
