In rock history?
you've got the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, 2000's(or present), to choose from.. which era was most innovative, had the greatest bands in you're opinion?

Although there are artists I like from every era, I think my favorite would have to be the 70's...

The 70's. The time of Queen, Led Zepplin, Aerosmith, Steve Miller Band, Lynard Skynard, Pink Floyd, just to name a few.

well many of my favorite bands started in the 60's but they are mostly known for their work in the 70's. As far as innovation each was equal you could not have the 70's without the 60's and the 60's had already built upon the 50's rock. There are many great 60's albums but if I was forced to only listen to one decade it would be the 70's because of the large number of great works produced and the many different bands out.

The Late 70's through the 80's

Well, since I've lived through them all I can honestly say they all had their moments. The 50's had the birth of rock. Elvis, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Little Richard started the melting pot that stirred black and white music together as one sound. Life was simple and innocent. If a girl showed her petticoat or kissed on the first date it was considered shameful.

The 60's brought the British invasion, Motown, the folk artists, fahsion awareness, social conscienous, and drug and sexual experimentation. The world started to shrink and the minds started to expand. War was raging and ravishing our young. Our innocence was beginning to fade.

The 70's showed a split in rock music with glam and progressive rock, punk, disco, and southern rock. If you liked disco you weren't cool. If you liked punk you were an outcast. If you listened to progressive rock you did acid. These were the labels I remembered although we all knew they weren't true. People started defending their type of music and their favorite bands. Life was carefree.

The 80's brought the video to the mainstream. Performers began to be judged on their appearance more than the music. Hair bands and metal reined supreme. Also, for the first time women were beginning to be taken seriously in rock. New wave and progressive were going strong as well as synthesizers. Rap was making it's way mainstream as was a deadly disease.

The 90's brought a rebirth to rock. It was kind of like the big bang. Rock had completely lost itself in the "looks" and not the "sound". Grunge brought rock back to basics as so did the resurgence of punk and some light r&b. Rap was now considered a true genre of rock. The video was still going strong with boy bands galore.

The beginning of the 21st century saw more different genres of rock than all the other eras combined. It seemed like everyone was getting their 15 minutes of fame whether they had talent or not. The airwaves became flooded with mediocre tunes and performers that were more interested in showing their bodies or how they dressed than their talent, that is if they had any. Personally, I feel this has been a low point in rock and I feel that it's just about time for something new to come along and shake things up. Whatever happens it should be fun and exciting and memorable.

It depends on the genre! I am partial to either POP music of the mid-'60s (roughly from '63-'68) - or - ROCK music of the '70s - the entire decade! A lot of music was still good in the '80s - the heyday of MTV - but it was all downhill after that.

like you said, i think that almost every era had good bands but for me it would have to be the present or the 70s because those eras to me have the best music of all time. the present music is awesome headbanging music and the 70s was just good music.

Just an old farts opinion but I'd say from about 1956 to 1969 with the emphasis on 1960-1965. Gotta remember, back then a Golden Oldie was about 8-10 years old. Now a golden oldie is last years music.
