Sadly, because they are blinded by their hatred for the President.

Congress has the Constitutional power to wage war. It also has the Constitutional obligation to appropriate funds. The 110th Congress, unlike the 108th and 109th Congress made the administration accountable for the funds which were appropriated. Petraeus was assigned by the administration, to provide a report on the progress of the war. Congress listened to the report and asked questions, which is what they are Constitutionally required to do.The report and answers were unsatisfactory.

It sounds rather fishy to me. general David Petraeus isn't something extra then a sell out. He bought out the persons under his command to further the schedule of George Bush. i do unlike sell outs, and that i don't think of background would be very form to general Petraeus. i'm hoping he has a feeling of right and incorrect, by way of fact he will could stay with it the the remainder of his pathetic existence.

Listening isn't part of the job description of Congress.

The only time I can recall them listening to anyone was when the most recent Immigration Bill was voted down because of public furor, despite it appearing to be a done deal. Even that promises to resurface with less fanfare in bits and pieces.

They saw his report as a golden opportunity for them to appear tough on camera and get in a few kicks at the President. They had no interest in obtaining the facts from the expert. If that were the case, they could have read the report in their office. It was a photo op for Lantos, Boxer, Ubama and other minor democrats who can't get in the news for doing anything positive.

Because the Congressional leadership does not want to listen to progress. They want failure and to be justified in their support of abandoning Iraq.

I did watch both presentations live at work. During his presentation to the Senate on the second day, several Democrat Senators actually decided to read the morning paper while the general was testifying.

Even the LIEberal news said they were giving him the thumbs down a full week before he was to give the report. Is it really that much of a surprise they didn't listen to him?

They did listen to him. They just don't believe he's giving an accurate assessment given the other reports they received that contradict his.

And several Republicans (Hagel, Warner, etc...) were the most vocal in expressing their disbelief as well.

These Congressional hearings are not about fact finding. At least not the televised ones.

They are about giving these sanctimonious blowhards (the Reps and Senators) an opportunity bloviate and beat up the poor guy in the hotseat, and score political points while on camera. It's been that way as long as I can remember.

How so? I thought everyone listened very attentively, although what he said turned out to be pretty much what the media/White House prepared us for.

One of the things Bush supporters claimed before his testimony was that his critics had no right to contradict him on policy matters, but then when he said that he doesn't know whether the war is making us safer they said he is just a military man who doesn't set policy.

But then they go back again and criticize Dem Senators whose job it is to set policy for doing just that.

Which is it?
