My friends and I did that and Hawaiian Tropic Oil, we didn't protect our skin. We wanted to get as tan as possible. I wouldn't do that now.

I used baby oil and iodine too and the lemon juice in my hair.
I think the spray stuff we used in our hair was called "Sun-In"
Then there was the wonderful product, I bet you all know it! QT, orange streaks, orange palms and orange knuckles.
Now weren't we a pretty bunch???
I would usually burn once, then get tan,,,,and orange, LOL

Oil will burn you faster than anything! - think of frying an egg. I have never heard of using iodine to tan - I suppose you will get a nice dye job from it, but some people are very allergic to it. I would be concerned that your system will absorb it. I would not use baby oil or iodine for tanning purpose. Tanning beds - eh... okay in moderation.

I did the baby oil and iodine for a tan while simultaneously using lemon juice and hydrogen peroxide for highlights.
Ended up with a blistered body and orange blotches in my hair.

I did, much to my regret. I am paying for it now. I still wanted a tan no matter what.
Now I am getting skin cancers removed from my face, my chest, and legs. It is impossible to stop people from getting a tan because it looks attractive and as a young woman, nothing kept me from laying out by the pool or beach and getting that healthy look from a tan.
thanks for the memories.

about 1964 we went to Crystal Beach. my room-mate and I were working 3 shifts at the time and so we wanted a fast tan. did the baby oil thing (you'd think nurses would know better) we kept looking at our skin and wondering why we were so white. needless to say when we got home we looked french-fried ,had chills so bad our teeth were chattering. I haven't lain out in the sun since!

Afraid to admit it. I did, and always got a beautiful tan. Now I don''t go near the sun without loads of sunscreen. I just use a fake tanning lotion.

I didn't use iodine, but I got the worst sunburn of my life after using baby oil and laying out in the sun. We were pretty ignorant back then.

Oh yes, I had forgotten that! Thing was though, it never really worked on me. When I changed to a suntan oil, i tanned. I would tell you what that suntan oil/lotion was, but I uh uh can't remember.
