Because the 0.01 is a fractional number between 1 and zero. In reality you are actually dividing and that is why you are getting a smaller number than the original number.
For example
10 * 0.5 = 5 this is the same as 10 * 1/2 (division) = 5
Even though you multiplied it is really the same as diving by two or if you right the number 0.5 in a fraction form 1/2 you will see that you are multiplying by 1 and dividing by two!
0.01 = 1/100

Because if you multiply 37.4 by 1, you will end up with the same answer. That being said, if you multiply a number with something less than 1 (.01) then you'll get a much lower answer.
.01 = 1 HundredTH

If you multiply it out the long way you can see why:
...37.4
...x.01
....374
+0000
....374 move the decimal from the end of the number 3 places to the left because there are 3 decimal places in the problem
so you get .374.

37.4 * 0.01
37.4(1/100) = 37.4/100
so by multiplying with 0.01 means actually you are dividing by 100.

.01 is a fraction, a fraction is less than a whole number. So, multiplying by less then a whole number will give you a smaller number.
Ex:
24*0.5=12
.5 in fraction from is 1/2 so it's like 24/2.
