Where can one get info on getting a Merchant ID?

How does one go about getting a Merchant ID for a computer repair store? are online store merchant IDs the same as a store you might see while driving around or at the mall? who is in charge of this? im in Minnesota. Thanks for your help!!

i do know that costco does the credit card authorization services. Is this the same as you are looking for?

Merchant ID for what? If you are talking about credit card processing, merchant IDs are assigned by processing companies to their customers. So when you sign up with a processor, you will be given a merchant ID.
