For all you who doubt it, Columbus is a pretty big market. They have a "cowtown" image, but metro Columbus has somewhere around 1.5 million people.
Back when the Cardinals were looking to move, Columbus was actually on their short list. In the end, they did not feel like they could pull enough support away from OSU football to make it worthwhile. They also wanted to play out of Ohio Stadium until a new stadium was built, and OSU told them to shove it.
I can't recall any NBA team every openly considering Columbus as a place to move or start a team, nor can I remember the city of Columbus actively pursuing one. Although there are many positives to acquiring an NBA team, there are more negatives than in any other sport. This can be evidenced by the sharp increase in crime the NBA brought to Las Vegas during the All Star game, a phenomenon not seem in any other events in this city of equal or larger magnitude.
I do not think Columbus has any interest in bringing another professional sports team into town now that they have the Blue Jackets. If they left the city things could change, but until then I don't see it happening.

I'd say Columbus is a big market but there are probably 10 bigger markets without a franchise. Also, Cincinnati and Cleveland are so nearby in relation to say San Diego and San Francisco or Dallas and Houston. Also have you noticed that Jacksonville, Fl has a team? It is not bc of the market, but more about what the city/franchise has to offer for the NFL. There's a ton of politics envolved that I myself won't take the time to get into. Look at Los Angeles. Houston offered the NFL more than LA, and Houston won.
